The brand new Nissan R89C was run for the first time in March 1989 which didn't leave much time before its first race on May 21 at Dijon, not to mention the Le Mans 24 Hours on June 11! Shortly after the first shakedown at Paul Ricard, Nissan took the new R89C to 240mph, thus proving it had the top end for Le Mans. Qualifying 6th at Dijon hinted at quickness and agility, in addition to outright speed!

Today's Grand Prix is dominated by digital chips, super fuels, and computer aided designs, but all of this modern technology is nothing compared to the success of Alfa Romeo 60 years ago, with a single car! That car was the Alfa Romeo 158, or 'Alfetta'. It raced successfully in the years before World War II, then in the period from 1946 to 1948, and then again in 1950 and 1951 - the first 2 years of the Formula 1 World Championship. The 935 was the ultimate development of the 911. In 1976 a single turbocharger helped the wildly modified flat-6 put out 590bhp at 7,900rpm. For short races, a higher turbo boost yielded well over 600bhp! The end result was one of the most competitive sports racers in the history of motorsport; 5 world championships and 32 major victories between 1976 and 1981, including Le Mans and Daytona!
